Sebastian Cynster knows time is running out. If he doesn't choose a wife soon, his female relatives will line up to assist him. Yet the current debutantes do not appeal. Where is he to find the right lady to be his marchioness? Then Drake Varisey, eldest son of the Duke of Wolverstone, asks for Sebastian's aid.
Having assumed his father's mantle in protecting queen and country, Drake must go to Ireland in pursuit of a dangerous plot. But he's received an urgent missive from Lord Ennis, an Irish peer - Ennis has heard something Drake needs to know and insists Drake attend an upcoming house party at his Kent estate so he can reveal his information face-to-face.
Sebastian has assisted Drake before and, long ago, had a liaison with Lady Ennis. Drake insists Sebastian is just the man to be his surrogate at the house party - the guests will imagine all manner of possibilities and be blind to Sebastian's true purpose.
Unsurprisingly, Sebastian is reluctant, but Drake's need is real. And with only more debutantes on his horizon, Sebastian allows himself to be persuaded.
His first task is to inveigle Antonia Rawlings, a lady he has known all her life, to include him as her escort to the house party. Although he's seen little of Antonia in recent years, Sebastian is confident of gaining her support.
Eldest daughter of the Earl of Chillingworth, Antonia has abandoned the search for a husband and plans to use the week of the house party to decide what to do with her life. There has to be some purpose, some role, she can claim for her own.
Consequently, on hearing Sebastian's request and an explanation of what lies behind it, she seizes on the call to action. Suppressing her senses' idiotic reaction to Sebastian's nearness, she agrees to be his partner in intrigue.
But while joining the house party proves easy, the gathering is thrown into chaos when Lord Ennis is murdered - just before he was to speak with Sebastian. Worse, Ennis's last words, gasped to Sebastian, are "Gunpowder. Here."
Gunpowder? And here? Where?
With a killer continuing to stalk the halls, side by side Sebastian and Antonia search for answers, and all the while the childhood connection that has always existed between them strengthens and blooms into something so much more.
The Lady by His Side The Devil’s Brood Trilogy Book 1 (Audible Audio Edition) Stephanie Laurens Matthew Brenher Books
Received and read this latest installation in the Cynster series today. In preparation, I'd reread some of the earlier books, but this book is easily understood without that background. It was good to see this generation showing their sense of honor, duty, adventure and family. The story is well done but shorter than I wished. It is very much centered on the house party, with beginning snippets and the ending set in London. In some ways, it reminds me of the Black Cobra quartet - this beginning of Sebastian and Antonia as a couple can't be really completed until this trilogy is over. I enjoyed the book and do plan to purchase all of them in paperback, although the increase in price didn't thrill me. I have all of Ms. Laurens' books and do pull them out to reread them.Product details

The Lady by His Side The Devil’s Brood Trilogy Book 1 (Audible Audio Edition) Stephanie Laurens Matthew Brenher Books Reviews
I am a huge fan of the Cynster series and have them all. But all of the books for the children have been really disappointing. I wonder if SL changed her genre from Romance to Mystery? All of the stories very lacking in developing the relationships, rather repetitive and scripted. Again I was expecting more. Don't buy it, read it from your library and invest in buying some other good authors.
Stephanie Laurens has begun another exciting trilogy featuring the Cynsters. We'll see all three of Devil Cynster's children marry as well as Wolverstone's oldest and Gyles Rawlings oldest.
What didn't I love
1. Sebastian just didn't feel 'real' to me. He grew up in the Cynster family that is absolutely filled with strong, intelligent, willful women and he has the wonderful example of his father, fathers cousins and uncle to see how to treat them. Yet -- Sebastian has no clue??? Sorry -- couldn't buy that part, yet it is pretty much the central theme.
2. I know that the book isn't about Devil and Honoria, but I would have liked to see them make a cameo appearance and get a better view of the family dynamics. At least we got to have a short visit with Gyles and Franchesca. I assume we'll get Devil and Honoria in the next book.
3. I also thought that the book was too short and I didn't really get to know Sebastian or Antonia.
4. It wasn't as suspenseful (read that dangerous) as I would have thought. Compare it to the recent Adventurers books and how suspenseful they were and this one just doesn't measure up.
What did I love
That this entire series solves one mystery - like the recent Adventurers series. So, each book in the trilogy will provide a new couple with an HEA while solving a portion of the mystery.
Having been a fan of Stephanie Laurens for more years than I care to count I have to say this was probably one of her books that I felt did not live up to my normal - "I can't put this down and finished it in one day" type of book. I loved the Cynster books, the recent Cynster next generation (the cousins) series and had high expectation for the coming of Sebastian and Antonia's book. Knowing the back story about both of their parents, I expected fireworks. Not "I knew you all of my life and now realize after not really seeing you and spending time with you - you are my other 1/2". I liked that Sebastian is silently assisting Whitehall - a true Cynster. What I did not buy was Antonia as a spinster getting ready to enjoy her freedom and again the sudden "you are my other half".
At times the story just seemed to drag on and get on my nerves. It took me 2 weeks to finish the book. I enjoyed the small glimpse given to Francesca & Giles , but like others would have liked to see Devil & Honoria. I also realize this is trilogy but will be broken hearted if after all these years I don't fall in love with Louisa & Drake's story. Especially since she was born - we knew Louisa would be a challenge.
FINAL DECISION Good story, good romance, but I wish there was more on the romance and less on the mystery. These were highly anticipated characters and I wish there was more about their journey. That being said, I understand it is more difficult to write stories about well-adjusted happy characters so I appreciate that their story needed more.
THE STORY Sebastian Cynster knows that it is time for him to find a wife because the women in his family are never patient about helping the men along if they need it. Just when Sebastian comes to that realization, he is asked by one of his friends, the heir to the Duke of Wolverstone, to help make contact with a peer who might have information about a plot against the country. Sebastian, however, needs a cover for attending the house party where he is to make contact. For that, he approaches another family friend, Antonia Rawlings to help provide a cover. Although the two grew up together, Sebastian has not had much contact with Antonia for years. He finds himself unexpectedly attracted to her. As to two work together to investigate the plot, they find themselves drawing closer.
OPINION I enjoyed this one but the mystery story was predominate here and by necessity there was a lot of backstory to set up in order to begin the trilogy. As a result, I didn't see much conflict in the relationship between Sebastian and Antonia. Everything was nice between them (as might be expected between two family friends where the relationships are so intertwined) and I liked them as a couple, but there wasn't much tension between them.
There was also less hot sexiness between them -- probably because Sebastian wasn't going to act the rake with Antonia. I did like the book however, and I thought the mystery was filled with interest and tension. I thought this one is working out better than many of the other series with the same overarching mystery format. Plus, what is not to love about having two characters infused with so much history find love together. My only real negative is that I wish we had seen Devil and Honoria in the book. Missed them greatly.
WORTH MENTIONING This book has a plot that is not resolved in this book. Although the romance is completed, there is an ongoing storyline that will be pursued by the next couple in the series.
CONNECTED BOOKS THE LADY BY HIS SIDE is the first book in the Devil's Brood Trilogy. It is also intimately connected with the long running Cynsters series. This book however, can be read as a standalone.
STAR RATING I give this book 4 stars.
