The general premise is ok, but the characters are so cheesy. Alex stands up to bullies, who are surprised repeatedly that a 6 1/2' tall guy covered in muscle and enchanted plate can beat them like small children.

All the good guys think Alex is their hero, the bad guys are comically evil/stupid, and there is very little tension, either romantic or combat.

Alex is the definition of the Gary Stu trope. He becomes a master enchanter/blacksmith without really earning it (secret hidden demigod powers go!). He's the quickest student at combat the trainer has ever seen, etc etc etc. He's also painfully good, a cinnamon roll too pure for this world. Also, all the women love him, but his delicate feelings are only for Maya. After months they have moved up to making out #gasp.

I have to say I am amazed that this got so many positive reviews. I would certainly not buy anything else from this author. It's boring, frankly. He's magic Superman+Batman, boom I saved you a few hours.

The only reason I didn't give it one star is it is fairly well edited, grammar wise.

This book is very difficult to properly assess. On the one hand, I read it fairly quickly, and when not reading wanted to get back to the story. On the other hand, the book is exasperating.

Alex Martin, the protagonist, beings the story as a typical blacksmith's son. Things (within the first 5 pages) all change, and he becomes an enchanter. From this point, the book becomes largely unbelievable. Every single character in the book (aside from 2, who are both clearly evil, as indicated by the authors immediate referral to them as 'jerks') tirelessly helps Alex. In return, Alex is perfect. He's never made a sword? Great, the first sword he makes is the best ever. He's never enchanted? great, he's now the best enchanter ever. The author seemingly is aware of these issues as he consistently states things like Oh wow, I don't know how I was so good at it, but I have the best teachers!

The book truly gets annoying, as every time there is a new hurdle, Alex covers it with nary a scratch on his character. Even when he seemingly makes a mistake in a relationship, his intended ends up crying on his arm about how no one else could have known that character flaw, and that he is therefore the best person ever!

Hopefully the author learns to create believable circumstances, and generate situations with consequences, rather than allowing his protagonist to skate through absolutely everything unscathed.

To summarize, the author can make likeable characters, and an interesting story. That being said, his flippant way of dealing with every single problem that arises becomes tiring and predictable very early on, and no evidence of growth is present.

Lastly, a point on the writing style. The author is not a particularly strong word-smith. Throughout the novel there is excessive reliance on base language (Piss, Jerk, Ass, Sucks, 'sucks ass', etc). Hopefully, with age and experience this, and other issues will be hammered out of the writing style, as there is clearly potential.
I liked this book. I liked how Ford is in first person mode of Alex who in the main character and jumps to another person, Maya to tell her side. He develops the characters as interesting individuals. There are 4 main characters. Alex a supposed human, Rosa a 700 year old green forest elf, Maya a dark elf and Nia a Pixe. With 3 bit players. Winya a spirit Alex placed in a sword (by her will), two young druids Lin and Julia. Later we are introduced to two young female dragons who take human form and join this little troup.
This is a well thought out book and good reading for fans of fantasy from teens to adults
This is one of the first books that I bought when I first got my . I have reread it several times and enjoyed it each time. Each book is the series just gets better. I highly recommend this series and look forward to reading more books in it
As a fan of fantasy books, the premise of a person gifted in the art of imbuing items with magic and learning about their art sounded like a really fresh idea that hadn't been beaten like a dead horse. Unfortunately this book is held back by cookie cutter characters and dialogue both dry and unacceptably predictable. I found the book to be a hard read, not in the fact that it was grammatically incorrect, but that I couldn't help but roll my eyes every time a character interacted with one another would either be a two dimensional smattering of relationship that has already been done a thousand times, only better. It's of course impressive to write your own book, but I can't really suggest this book unless it is for a 8-12 year old child getting their feet wet in the world of fantasy fiction. There is definitely all the parts of a story in it, but instead of focusing on what made it unique and developing the characters in any meaningful way, we are left with 2-D cut outs of the standard fantasy archetypes.
This book is an easy read. It's enjoyable, and interesting. I think the pacing is a little fast at times and the main character powers up far too easily, but that seems to be the style of the book. Even with the main character being so powerful, it's interesting that they still are effectively losing so all in all it balances.

However, please try to refrain from the "easy power-ups" of Mommy and Daddy suddenly granting him more powers so he can solve some problem but have them come in a logical manner from here on out.

I'll read the next book.
This book is not great literature, but it is fun. This book held my interest and I don't regret buying it. The hero of the book might be too super-powered if you know what i mean, he even cooks. The novel probably would be more suited to a young adult crowd, but I'm young at heart. It is not in the same league as Tamora Pierce, but again a delightful story. I will be buyiing the sequel
