Anne Sinclair is in love with another man who is about to offer for her when she is ruined by Lord Ruan Bettancourt, the Duke of Cynssyr. It was a mistake due to her having taken laudanum for a sprained ankle and him showing up to find her in his bed, mistaking her for a 'gift'. They must marry, for once to save his reputation as he basically forced her; because she's poor, no one seems to care about her future. Things don't look good for their marriage, but Anne is intelligent and Ruan needs her help to find a group of men who are kidnapping and abusing young women.
I like Ms. Jewel's writing. She writes steamy romances with interesting characters. Anne is sensible, determined not to fall in thrall to her new husband who is arrogant and earned the title of 'Lord Ruin'. I had some trouble with Ruan. There's an attempt to explain why his character is so bad as a result of the Napoleonic wars, but it didn't really work. It aggravated me that he was supposed to be in love with Anne and wooing her, but still hanging with several of his former mistresses. I really didn't like the scene where Anne pretty much caves to him even though he's asking his former mistress to take him back. It seems he still has quite a way to go to rehabilitate his character. I'm willing to give him a chance and hope he'll do better in the next two books.

Lord Ruin Carolyn Jewel 9780843951356 Books Reviews

Ok so some of this book was really good. But I struggled to follow the many many characters& the disorganized side story of kidnappings. The duke seemed arrogant and unlikeable, sorry his name is so strange I must have tried 50 times to figure out how to pronounce it. **spoiler** I’m disgusted at his behavior at the very end of the book. He’s having a conversation with his “ex mistress” while his beat up wife is resting upstairs ... only for her to come down and catch them together & hear the duke tell his mistress he loves his wife so much but bc he thinks she doesn’t love him he is asking his ex mistress if she’ll take him back - like what the what !?!?! I legit wanted to punch him. Thumbs down
The interaction and dialogue between characters, promising in first chapters, nearly disappears by midpoint.
The story then felt remote, passionless- largely due to surfeit of internal dialogue and newsreporting style, instead of showing interactions.

Cynsyrr's internal thoughts revolve around his emotions and lust for his new wife, though little is demonstrated.
As for Anne's emotions, readers are given little clue. Author often doesn't bother to show or tell Anne's POV, which makes charcter unappealing.

There are disjointed areas of story and lapses where events, that charcters seem familiar with, occur out of the blue to the reader. Editting?
Eventually lost all interest in both the characters and story. Couldn't force myself past mid-book.

2+ stars (plus is benefit of doubt, because I didn't finish story) Highly doubt I will buy more by this author.
I read this book a few years back and remember that overall, it was a bit better than average read but a few things in the storyline bugged me at that time which in my mind, knocked this one out of a 5 star rating. So, I decided to revisit LR and to "switch things up", chose the audio version this time around. Have to say that for me, listening was preferable to reading as I seemed to be more immersed in the story, however, the things that annoyed me then still annoyed me now. Gosh, I'd love to pick Ms. Jewel's brain and ask her the following;

++++Possible spoilers ahead++++

1. Why choose your leading lady to be so weak? Anne certainly started out strong as she had every intention of confronting LR to stop his engagement to her sister...but it seemed that once the ring was on her finger, Anne fell hopelessly in love with her rake husband and inexplicably turned into a pushover. Yes, she agreed to make him a good wife and committed herself to the marriage in spite of the shocking circumstances and the reason for their wedding. After all, a deals a deal... BUT, walking in on LR and his mistress while they were obviously playing around in THEIR home during a ball in honor of THEIR recent marriage, Anne, in my mind, did not react appropriately to the situation (by that I mean showing a little dignity and throwing the tramp out on her ear and then telling hubby how disgusted she is with his disrespectful behavior, especially after he called his mistress 'darling' in Anne's presence) When told by hubby that he just now gave the mistress her walking papers, Anne readily believed him and hoped for the best...Then, several months later, LR confesses to Anne that he's still seeing his mistress. What does she do? Why she goes to bed with him even though he just left his mistresses bed. Ick, ick and ick. Shaking my head because I just don't understand this...

2. Why make LR so insecure and almost tortured when it comes to Anne? Yes Anne is beautiful within and a kind, gentle soul but I never got why he (along with every other male character in this book) was so strongly attracted to her. I don't recall them having any deep, philosophical discussions. She certainly wasn't that accomplished in the arts, just more than average in appearance (with great legs and big boobs) No fiery temperament or unique personality...So why the obsession with Anne? I just didn't see it. Also, If LR is as hopelessly in love with Anne and wants to be a man worthy of her love and trust, what's the point of still having the mistress around? Especially since Anne is obviously satisfying his sexual needs...

3. Lastly, why did LR mention divorcing Anne to that pesky mistress toward the end of the book? To me, that made absolutely no sense... Yes, he believed that Anne could never love him as he loved her but for crying out loud, she was having his baby. So by divorcing her, what happens to the child's future? What happens to Anne's reputation as well as his career in Parliament? That solution was a tad 'nuclear' to say the least and I didn't understand why it was even written into the story since divorce in those days had HUGE, negative repercussions to ALL involved. Don't think that Ms. Jewel thought that one through...
